What Distinguishes the Amex Card

The ANA American Express cards in Japan run on Amex Membership Rewards (MR) with Amex-specific transfer rules and a few Amex-only perks

Other ANA Cards (VISA/Mastercard/JCB) earn their issuer’s points and use the 5-mile/10-mile plan to convert those points to ANA miles.

Here’s a concise, apples-to-apples look at ANA American Express Gold versus the closest competitors at the same tier in Japan (VISA Wide Gold by SMBC and JCB Wide Gold). Figures are current as of Aug 27, 2025.

Eligibility and How To Apply (Japan)

Have an ANA Mileage Club number. Join AMC for free if you don’t have one.

Apply on American Express Japan’s ANA card page for Basic, Gold, or Premium. You’ll provide identity info, address in Japan, income, and agree to a credit check.

Activate and link AMC after approval so flight bonuses and points transfers work correctly.

Enroll in online services to set alerts and autopay.

Tip: If you’re mainly in the U.S., there isn’t a U.S.-issued “ANA Amex.” You can instead use U.S.-issued American Express cards that earn MR and transfer MR → ANA 1:1 (1,000 MR = 1,000 miles), in 1,000-point blocks. Transfers usually complete in 2–4 business days

How You Earn Ana Miles With Amex Card

Your ANA Amex earns MR points on purchases. Move those points to ANA miles using the Membership Rewards ANA Course.

If you don’t add MR Plus: 2 points = 1 mile; transfer in 2,000-point units; annual cap 80,000 points (40,000 miles).

If you add MR Plus (paid): 1 point = 1 mile; 1,000-point units; annual cap 40,000 points (40,000 miles).

First-ever transfer often takes ~2 weeks; after that, ANA transfers typically finish within about 5 business days.

ANA Card Miles Plus (stacking earn)

When you pay at ANA Card Miles Plus partners (including ANA), you earn 1 mile per ¥100 or ¥200 in addition to your card’s points.

On ANA ticket purchases, the total effective earnings can be higher when you stack MR→ANA plus the partner miles.

Boarding Bonus on ANA flights

On ANA-operated flights credited to AMC, you get a card-type bonus.

+10% (Basic), +25% (Gold), +50% (Premium), applied to the flown miles (base × fare/class multiplier).

You don’t need to pay with the card to receive this; you must hold the card and credit the flight to AMC.

Rates To Expect

Always confirm the Summary/Terms on Amex Japan’s application page before you submit, because fees and structures can change.

  • Revolving/Installment interest (PayFlex/リボ・分割): effective APR 14.9%. You’ll pay this when you revolve or convert “after-the-fact” (あとリボ/あと分割). Paying your full statement by the due date avoids interest.
  • MR transfer add-on fees: MR ANA Course ¥5,500/yr (required to transfer to ANA). MR Plus ¥3,300/yr (optional; enables 1:1 transfers). Some premium cards include MR Plus at no extra cost.
  • Transfer frequency/caps: once per day; annual caps noted above; first transfer may take longer.

Practical Plan to Earn Ana Miles With Amex Card

Book ANA flights directly and include your AMC number to trigger +10% / +25% / +50% flight bonuses.

Use ANA Card Miles Plus merchants to stack partner miles + MR points.

Batch MR→ANA transfers a few days before you redeem. Allow ~5 business days (longer for the first transfer).

Set autopay to avoid 14.9% revolving charges.
